Mitchell Science & Technology Center, LEED Certified
Location: Gorham, ME
Architect: Harriman | Architecture, Engineering & Planning

Construction at the University of Southern Maine’s John Mitchell Science & Technology Center nearly doubled the original structure. Wright-Ryan built the 23,000 square foot addition to allow for testing labs, classrooms and computer labs. The existing space was renovated and all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and sprinkler systems were updated. The building was registered by the U.S. Green Building Council and earned a LEED Certification– the second in the State of Maine and the first achieved by Maine owners, architects and contractors.
Our Millwork division also did extensive work creating custom conference tables, lecture hall desks, and other finishing touches using products from renewable resources. The millwork is banded with cherry, which will darken with prolonged exposure to the air and will add depth and contrast to the desks. All the lumber that we used on this project comes from well-managed forest and is independently certified as Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
